Valve are going to run a short beta on Steam to test the new version of Friends. To run the beta you'll need to run Steam from a command line, adding the following parameters:
steam.exe -clientbeta steam3friends -beta steam3friends
If you find any bugs, please add comments to this page with a description of the problem.
A helpful bug format is:
short title
Expected: expected behavior
Observed: observed behavior
Steps to reproduce: steps to reproduce the problem
a description of your network topology.

Half-Life 2 pre-loading begins to Steam account holders. Over the coming days, those who have selected the pre-loading option will have encrypted Half-Life 2 files delivered to their PC. No purchase is required to pre-load HL2, but is required to activate the game. Purchase options will be released soon. Then, the moment the game is made available, those who have pre-loaded and purchased Half-Life 2 via Steam will be authenticated and ready to start playing.

Starting July 26th the shutdown of the WON authentication servers will begin. This process will be completed on July 31st. This means players will no longer be able to access Internet features of Valve games, such as Counter-Strike 1.5, using the WON authentication servers. Users can continue using Valve games on the Steam service by downloading the Steam installer and setting up a Steam account. For more information visit www.steampowered.com. Counter-Strike 1.5 players will be upgraded to Counter-Strike 1.6 free of charge through Steam.

There has been a small update to Steam. This release mainly
affects the server browser.
SERVER BROWSER:
- Fixed bug where "no LAN servers on network" message wouldn't appear in
server list if no servers responded to LAN ping
- Fixed bug where servers weren't being sorted by ping by default
- Added region to filter info string
- Added installed MODS to game filter dropdown
- Change game filter to display full game name instead of short name

An update for all Steam games has just been released. As always, Steam will
update your games automatically -- you don't need to take any special
action.
Dedicated server admins can get the update normally via the HLDS update
tool, or the dedicated server update can be downloaded directly from
this page.
Here's a complete list of the changes:
ALL GAMES:
- Fixed problem in Direct3D mode where the game would be unavailable for
some users. Direct3D mode should work now, but note that OpenGL will
provide a better play experience if your video card is capable
- Fixed regression that was causing the 'load failed' crash to happen on
level change
- Optimized some of the particle drawing code
- For mod makers - debugging mods no longer requires the steam.dll to be
copied into the game directory
