Ok, I went back to my QuakeWorld map collection to have a look around, and I tested some of the maps in duel mode. I tested A2, P3A and Aggressor.
A2 is a great map, for FFA or other 'big' games, but the duel on this map was not so exciting, the maps a bit big and things just happened quite slowly. P3A was a slight improvement, I love this map for 2v2s and FFAs, but unfortunately the frogbot code I have for this map in duel sucks quite bad, perhaps with better competition it would be more exciting.....
Finally I tried Aggressor, a map I liked when I first downloaded it, but I didn't give it much of a chance. I remember at the beginning of the year I discovered Blessed To Kill, which I really enjoyed at first but strangely enough I got bored of quite soon and ended up just playing dm4 again.
I played Aggressor duel and its a really nice duel map, not claustraphobic like bless, and despite being somewhat 'medium' sized, the action always seems to be where you are.. unless of course you decide you don't want it to be and the map allows for plenty of escaping. I had so much fun playing it duel that in 1 sitting I had eventually learned all the spawn locations and teleports. What is so great is the huge vertical aspect to the map and the way that the map can play out like dm6 when under pressure from a dominating player, however this map gives the 'GA' player (player stuck at the side of the map with weak items) more of a chance because there is a further room with YA plus the lightning gun AND MH is GA side.
ANyway I feel like reviewing the map later today and just a suggestion for conversion if there are any map converters out there with free time and nothing to do, check out the map in QW and if you like it give it a shot.... I know i'd at least play it heh.. If it was converted id make sure that pFc members train in it for duel.. if only so I got an opponent for my own pleasure and fun of duelling on it.. so selfish ;p

i think instead of duel conversions , we need more trick map conversions especially with dmq out now. I drool for the day ztricks is converted to dmc.
zjumps also. way2ez. v_kjumps..... trix2 the list goes on. i dont kno the maps u mentioend tayste, i never played them. not many guys duel a lot anymore, at least i dont, trick maps might get more play. i would love to see trick maps converted tho and i know some agree with me.
i hope someone makes my dreams reality |

I am trying to convert ztricks now pun unfortunatly i suck. Im getting compile errors so i guess i need to read more !
As for the trick map thing your right there, i been running a test version of south's new bunny map(dmc_sbunny_test1) and its really popular, i guess because its a new challenge for most players and its not easy
Im with you with the zjumps aswell thats got to be the best jump map EVER made. |

I know it sucks but im in a duel 'phase'... Im not as interested in tricks as before because I don't think I can improve upon my movement ;[
As for duel, I can improve it.. which leaves a challenge.. which keeps me interested.. i guess. |

I had a look at ztricks as well. I got it to compile but now I get 'bad surface extent' errors whenever I try to run it. Have you had any further luck with it?
To get it to compile I changed a bunch of coordinates from 4090 (I think) to 4000 as it thought 4090 was too big (strange, I thought 4096 was the limit) and then ran the RAD exe with the -sparse option. |

Nope i didnt get anywhere with it, i passed it onto south but i think zjumps will get done 1st.
I did actually figure hammer out (thanks south) and i made a small room with some blocks to jump on and its worked out quite nice....just need to put a tele floor in.
It actually only took about 30 mins to make and prolly another 60 to get the jumps spaced right and its given me some more ideas
Hop_test3 is running on my server now but because of my noob mapping skills your gonna need a few wads to get on it which im gonna go and fix now! |

3 years later I am ready for trick maps. I was dueling for those 3 years.. unfortunately never on Aggressor.. which I maintain as FRIGGIN AWESUM, and turns out 3 years on that it never gets old.. just pure genius map. Never got converted =( Oh well =(
Only trick map I have played in the past was trick1, I think by Wangmauler. That was a very long time ago. So I try zjumps, its very easy, download today, finish today.. zjumps_pro too... I thought it would add some extra area at the end but seems exact same except a couple minor differences in the platform placement..
I played dmc_hoppa2 today and although I didn't finish it seemed about as easy as zjumps.. but then I tried dmc_hoppa and oh boy this is what im looking for.. this one looks like to pose a great challenge. I will get stuck right in though.. seems very frustrating map ^^
I already did dmc_sj and that was reeaally fun I think much better than zjumps cos of the variety.. these bunnyhop maps are fun to see what the next area is like but repetitive and making u rely more on positioning and direction than technique.. but whatever, I think if mappers put more thought into technique required instead of difficulty of the sections, then it leads to more fun. I am aware that sometimes technique comes with difficulty, but an example of where it doesnt is the first section of dmc_sj level 3.. which is easy when u have technique.. Anyway.. ye.. im 3 years late. =) |
