Introduction
Going right back the beginning of online gaming, first-person shooter style, it all started with Quake. At the time the 3D engine was revolutionary and many other companies rushed to license the technology for their own creations. One such company was Valve who used the licensed Quake technology to produce the stunningly successful Half-Life.
Now several years after its release, Valve have paid a homage to Quake with the release of Deathmatch Classic. Put plain and simple, it is a graphically-enhanced version of the original Quake. Including some of the most popular original deathmatch maps, this is the perfect opportunity for the newer gamers to see where it all started and just why the older gamers come over all misty eyed when the word 'Quake' is mentioned.

Playing The Game
Deathmatch Classic takes everything back to basics with a simple kill-or-be-killed approach. There are none of the fancy mission-based objectives or obsessive realism-based notions that are found in many games today.
The rules are simple: you score one point for each kill (frag) with the winner being either the first player to reach a certain score or the player with the highest score after a certain period of time.

Deathmatch Classic implements the unparalleled game physics of Quake perfectly, offering players an amazing amount of control not only on the ground but also in the air. We’re not talking realism in any form here, we’re talking gaming for the sake of fun with outrageous moves that require a combination of the games movement physics and the exaggerated blast radius from certain weapons.

The most well-known move must be the 'rocket jump'. Firing the rocket launcher at your feet then jumping shortly afterwards catapults you to incredible heights and opens up maps in ways you previously wouldn’t have thought of.

If you’re trying out Deathmatch Classic having already cut your teeth on other popular Half-Life mods such as Team Fortress Classic and Counter-Strike you are in for a bit of a shock. This is fast paced action with regular and swift deaths. There are many parts of the game that will take you some time to get to grips with aside from older Quake players smacking everyone on the server silly.

Don’t let this put you off though as perseverance really does pay off and you’ll find that this is the perfect training ground to enhance your reflexes and skills for use in virtually any first-person shooter.

Staying Alive
Deathmatch Classic is fast and frantic so if you want to survive you have to keep moving. If you stand still you’re likely to find yourself catching rockets in your teeth.
Speaking of rockets, the primary weapon in the game is undoubtedly the rocket launcher. Don’t get caught without one and try your best to make sure your opponents don’t get their hands on one.

Doing well is all about control - you need to dominate as much of the map as possible. Of course you can’t be everywhere at the same time but you need to make sure you hold the main powerups, in particular the 'quad' and armour. Without armour, opponents are much easier to take down and with the quad you can dish out an awesome amount of destruction.

Each item has a specific respawn time at which point they reappear to be picked up again. Plan a route around the maps with these times in mind.

Primary Weapons
As with the gameplay and physics, Deathmatch Classic has reproduced the Quake arsenal perfectly. The rocket launcher is the weapon to get your hands on. However, there are other weapons available to fall back on :
Axe: when all else fails (ie. you’re out of ammunition) this is what you’re left with. Useless against any armed foe, if things get this bad you should be looking for ammunition not looking for opponents.

Shotgun: this is your default spawn weapon. Not a great weapon but annoying if you’re constantly being pecked at by someone with a good aim.

Super shotgun: great stopping power at close range but useless at long range.

Nailgun: similar in power and annoyance factor to the shotgun, only it fires a rapid stream of nails instead.

Super nailgun: rapid fire nails dishing out lots of damage. Excellent when combined with the quad.

Grenade launcher: great for covering a retreat or taking someone out in a confined space.

Rocket launcher: the weapon to have. Masses of damage with a large splash radius. Devastating with the quad.

Lightning gun: a great weapon for close combat only due to its limited range. Deadly with the quad.

Along with weapons there are also various other items that you can pick up :

Armour: it’s no surprise that wearing armour greatly increases your chances of survival. Damage taken when wearing armour gets taken off of the armour value first before your health. Your armour value increases a set amount depending on the colour of the armour that you pick up (Green – 100, Yellow – 150, Red – 200).

Mega health: adds 100 to your health which then slowly trickles away over time.

Ring of shadows: makes you totally invisible except for your eyes which can still be seen.

Pentagram of protection: invulnerability for a limited period of time. Players glow red whilst invulnerable.

Quad damage: this little beauty multiplies your damage by a factor of 4. Players glow blue whilst 'quaded'.

TIP: If you see someone glowing purple - run like the wind. This means they have both the pentagram and the quad and are looking for a fight.
